Moccasin Creek Camping

Posted in Family, Trips on Oct 23, 2009

We recently packed up the van and headed to Moccasin Creek State Park in northern Georgia for a weekend of camping.  Certainly a well needed trip away from work and the daily grind.  Carol had planned this trip six weeks in advance and it seemed to take an eternity to arrive.  Unfortunately not everyone got to go.  Violet had to stay behind from the get-go.   Even though this was a short trip, it was to relax a bit – take deep breaths – wash – rinse – repeat…. and while camping with Violet would certainly prove fun it would also, at least until she is a bit older, be exhausting.  Jacob also stayed behind, opting out the night before, choosing to hang out with Nana, Troy and Violet (we missed you buddy!).

Overall the trip was fun.  A typical, if there is such a thing, camping weekend.  In on Saturday and out on Monday – eat, play, sleep – what more could you ask for !!!

Piper and Isaac were open full throttle as well.  They played Star Wars and Indiana Jones around the camp site almost any time we were idle.  Isaac even taught Piper the theme songs….at least well enough that she can hum – brings a tear to my eye.  We took them on a nature hike on Sunday.  We did not get to encounter any wildlife, friendly or unfriendly, but did get to see plenty of things along the way.  The guided portion of the trail was well marked with various stations where you could stop and learn bits about what was around you.  We aren’t certain if we made it all the way to the end of trail but we did make it to the falls.  Once there we stayed a bit and then headed back to camp.

Sunday night it started to rain pretty hard and some of our fellow campers told us to expect several inches of rain.  For a brief minute we contemplated packing up and heading home a day early.  Instead we just laughed at the rain, the kids were running in circles playing, and while it was cold, there was not wind, thunder or lightning – just a straight down pour.  We built a makeshift lean-to over the campfire and propane stove, grabbed our seats and enjoyed ourselves.  It rained all night.  By morning the rain had slowed but our tent had a few inches of water in it.  After a quick breakfast we packed up and headed home.
